I, Tony Murray, was at my wits end. I couldn't get people to respond to phone calls or emails. My verbal partner decided to drop out of the process. And, all of the work that was supposed to have been completed in the off-season was incomplete. Time had run out on the idea of a SMUSA race season.
Upon having a conversation in the first week of June 2006, everything seemed to change. I had heard from riders in regards to making something happen so that they would have another place to ride. I felt compelled to do something but, I didn't know exactly what could be done. Sonja Lifsey, Jason Hartman of Teknikos Racing, and myself decided that it was time to give the riders something they could build. We figured that if they helped build the series, then it would definitely be something that would keep their interests in mind. A series that they would help expand through the spirit of competition, while reaching out to others who may have never experienced the sport of supermoto. Thus, the beginning of Eastern SuperMoto Racing Association (ESMRA).
It was now a race against the clock. Could we do what needed to be done in time to assume the race dates that SMUSA had set with different tracks and organizations? This became an around the clock effort by all three of us to get this done. Jason instantly became the webmaster, as well as a sponsor for the organization. Sonja, ESMRA COO, and Jason worked tirelessly on getting everything formatted correctly for the website. I worked every day or every night to help finance the project. Once my work day was done, I would help Sonja and Jason. Truly a 24 hour per day effort given by three people who wanted to make something happen for the sport of supermoto. Glad we did it!
